During biofuel production, biomass (plant material) undergoes pyrolysis; aldehydes have been found to be byproducts of biomass pyrolysis. Therefore, knowing how aldehydes behave when exposed to high temperatures could be beneficial in predicting byproducts or contaminents in biofuels. Studying aldehyde pyrolysis can also be useful by modeling individual reactions that take place in combustion processes. In this work, the thermal decomposition of propanal was studied.
